The 6th Grade MIddle School Program is designed for students seeking a challenging and integrated learning experience.
Our dedicated and caring teachers, along with a small class size, provide our students with the opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment. The innovative curriculum allows students to challenge themselves, both academically and personally.
Premier Outdoor Learning
The sixth-grade students participate in a series of outdoor field trips and experiences, both on and off-campus. This provides the opportunity for students to connect with nature, experience “hands-on” learning and develop an appreciation for the natural world around them.
Thanks to our partners at Saint John’s Outdoor University, our 2,700-acre campus becomes an outdoor classroom, conveniently located in our backyard! From learning about the biomes of Minnesota and climate change, to discovering alternative energy sources and the maple syrup process, to exploring a variety of water-related topics. Students also develop their creative writing skills by journaling the changes they observe each month in their chosen “spot in the woods.” Students may also learn about biomimicry, a science unit involving the study of nature’s models and then use these designs and processes to solve human problems. In other words, innovation inspired by nature.
In addition, the sixth grade class takes many off-campus field trips to enhance learning, including the ever-popular fall field trip to learn about Native Americans and an overnight winter visit to an environmental center in northern Minnesota.
Exploratory World Language Program
Our 6th Grade Program provides students the unique opportunity to participate our Exploratory World Language Program. The objective of this program is to provide the students an introduction, and foundation, in the three world languages offered at the school, including Chinese, German and Spanish. No prior knowledge of the language is expected. Spoken communication will be emphasized, but all four areas of language acquisition (reading, listening, writing, and speaking) will be developed. Approximately 10 weeks will be spent on each language. This enables students to make an informed decision when selecting the world language to continue studying in 7th grade.
Research shows many benefits of music education programs, including cognitive development. Whether your child is new to music, or is experienced, students in the fifth and sixth grades have the opportunity to be involved in band, choir or orchestra. Individual lessons are provided, at no additional charge, during the school day.
Students are also involved in art classes daily. They incorporate lessons in the classroom with lessons in the studio to enrich their learning experience.
